Why LinkedIn Still Matters
Despite the noise in the job market, LinkedIn remains the single most important professional platform. Over 90% of recruiters actively use LinkedIn to source candidates. Your profile is your 24/7 recruiter magnet — but only if it's optimized correctly.
The 7 Critical Elements to Fix
1. Your Headline (Most Ignored, Most Important)
Most people just put their job title. This is a massive missed opportunity. Your headline appears next to your name in every search result and message preview. It should describe the value you deliver, not just your title.
Bad: "Software Engineer at Infosys"
Good: "Senior Software Engineer | React & Node.js | Building Scalable Products for FinTech | Open to Senior/Lead Roles"
2. Your Photo
Profiles with professional photos get 14x more views. The photo doesn't need to be professionally taken, but it should be: clear, recent, well-lit, and show you from shoulders up with a neutral background.
3. The About Section
Write in first person. Tell your story. Explain what you do, what makes you different, and what you're looking for next. End with a clear call to action ("Open to senior engineering roles in fintech or e-commerce — message me to connect").
Use paragraphs, not bullet points. Recruiter scroll behavior shows they spend more time on well-formatted narratives.
4. Experience Section
Each role should include:
- A 2-3 sentence description of the company and your role
- 3-5 bullet points with specific, quantified achievements
- Relevant technologies and keywords for your target roles
Avoid describing duties. Describe impact: "Reduced API response time by 60%, supporting 10x growth in transaction volume."
5. Skills Section
Add the maximum 50 skills, prioritized by what's most relevant to your target roles. Skills with endorsements rank better in LinkedIn search. Ask former colleagues to endorse your top 5 skills — you'll find most are happy to do it if you ask.
6. Open to Work Setting
Turn on the "Open to Work" setting and set it to "Recruiters Only" if you're currently employed (keeps it private from your current employer). Add all relevant job titles, preferred locations, and indicate if you're open to remote work.
7. Activity & Content
Profiles that are active get dramatically more visibility. You don't need to post constantly — even engaging with 2-3 posts per week (commenting thoughtfully, not just "Great post!") keeps your profile active in the algorithm.
Quick Wins for This Week
- Update your headline with value-focused language
- Add a professional photo if you don't have one
- Quantify 3 achievements in your most recent role
- Turn on Open to Work for recruiters
- Connect with 10 new people in your target industry
These five actions alone can dramatically increase the number of recruiter messages you receive within 2-3 weeks.
