About the role
We're looking for a Backend Engineer to own and scale the services that power the workforce-planning and scheduling platform across enterprise clients. You'll work on a Python/Django codebase backed by PostgreSQL and Celery, solving real production problems for large, multi-tenant deployments. This is a hands-on role for someone who genuinely enjoys digging into hard problems, reasoning through edge cases, and shipping reliable systems.
Responsibilities:
- Design, build, and maintain backend APIs and services using Python, Django, and Django REST Framework.
- Model data and write efficient queries against PostgreSQL FK joins, indexing, and query optimisation.
- Build and operate asynchronous workflows with Celery (scheduled jobs, background tasks, queues).
- Debug and resolve production issues across multi-tenant environments; trace root causes, not just symptoms.
- Write clean, well-tested, maintainable code and take part in code reviews.
- Collaborate with frontend, product, and DevOps to deliver features end-to-end.
- Contribute to performance, reliability, and security improvements.
Requirements:
- Strong proficiency in Python and a modern web framework (Django/DRF preferred).
- Solid experience with relational databases (PostgreSQL) and writing performant SQL.
- Strong debugging skills, able to systematically isolate, reproduce, and fix complex production issues.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking that breaks down ambiguous problems and weighs trade-offs.
- Strong logical reasoning: designs correct, edge-case-aware solutions and can defend design decisions.
- Solid grasp of CS fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, complexity, and concurrency.
