Designation: Manager/ Sr. Manager – Carrier & Freight CommercialLocation: Gandhinagar
Role purposeThis position owns the commercial relationship with every carrier the business uses — rate negotiation, lane allocation, contract renewal and freight cost assurance. It sits directly under the Head of Supply Chain & Logistics and is separate from trade and customs compliance, which is a distinct function. The role carries a monthly express freight spend running in the order of 23 crore, against which no contracted rate table currently exists for the India entities.
Key responsibilities
- Own every carrier contract end to end — FedEx across both India entities and the US entity, UPS, Emirates and new entrants — including a renewal and expiry calendar with a named owner against every date, so that no term lapses unnoticed.
- Negotiate and benchmark rates, and build the rate card baseline the business does not currently hold. Roughly 89% of monthly freight spend is un-baselined today.
- Own lane allocation — routing volume to the right carrier by cost, transit time and service level — and document the logic so it can be audited and repeated.
- Govern dimensional divisors, fuel and surcharge concessions across all carriers, including the US amendment concessions that expire in February 2027 and revert to list.
- Own freight cost assurance — charged weight against company record, invoice audit before payment, and recovery claims through to credit.
- Drive down accessorial and exception charges by working with operations on root cause, not only by validating them after billing.
- Monitor volume commitments and surge clauses against contractual thresholds, and flag a breach before the carrier does.
- Run carrier governance — quarterly business reviews, SLA reviews, escalation matrices and service remedies.
- Report carrier cost monthly into the business review and into the gross margin programme.
- Support the trade and customs compliance function on carrier-side documentation, without owning compliance itself.
Required skills, qualifications and experience
- 10 to 14 years in freight procurement, carrier management or logistics commercial, with direct hands-on negotiation with international express carriers.
- Demonstrated contract negotiation on an annual freight spend of 100 crore or above.
- Deep working knowledge of express pricing mechanics — dimensional divisors, fuel tables, accessorial structures, zone and lane pricing, earned discount tiers and volume commitments.
- Freight audit and recovery experience, including building and defending a claim against a carrier.
- Strong commercial analytics — able to build a cost model, defend it to Finance, and put it in front of a carrier without it being picked apart.
- Exposure across air, ocean and parcel modes; export-led businesses preferred.
- Able to hold a senior carrier relationship and a difficult commercial conversation without damaging it.
- Graduate. MBA or postgraduate qualification in Supply Chain, or CIPS or equivalent procurement certification, an advantage.
What good looks like in the first 90 days
- A complete rate card and contract baseline across every carrier, in one register.
- A renewal and expiry calendar with a named owner against each date, including the February 2027 surcharge cliff.
- The open recovery claim either closed or on an agreed, dated path with the carrier.
- Lane allocation logic documented and agreed with operations.
- A first view of accessorial spend by type, with the three largest reduction opportunities quantified.
