About the role
Engagement context: ECC ā S/4HANA assessment and roadmap study for a discrete/process manufacturing client with one of the most complex VC implementations in its landscape (deep model hierarchies, heavy dependency logic, and costing integration).
Responsibilities- Perform a full inventory and complexity assessment of the current VC model: configurable materials, class/characteristic structures, variant tables, variant functions, object dependencies (preconditions, selection conditions, procedures, constraints), and configuration profiles.
- Analyse VC integration touchpoints across SD (variant pricing, VC in quotations and sales orders), PP (super BOM, super routing, order BOM, ETO scenarios), MM, and CO (sales order costing, variant costing, valuation of configurable stock).
- Evaluate the fit and gap between the current LO-VC setup and S/4HANA options: continue with LO-VC (classic) versus migrate to Advanced Variant Configuration (AVC), including constraint-based modelling and the AVC migration tooling.
- Identify simplification items, deprecated functionality, custom VC code (user exits, variant functions, BAdIs), and interface dependencies that require rework.
- Estimate remediation and migration effort, define risks and mitigation options, and document the recommended target VC architecture and phasing.
- Support the overall S/4HANA assessment team with VC-specific inputs into the business case, roadmap, testing strategy, and data-migration approach.
- Run workshops with product engineering, sales, production planning, and finance stakeholders to validate findings and secure buy-in.
- Produce boardroom-ready deliverables: current-state assessment, options analysis, recommendation, and implementation roadmap.
- Deep, hands-on expertise in SAP LO-VC: characteristics, classes, dependencies, variant tables and functions, configuration profiles, pricing factors.
- Practical experience with SAP S/4HANA Advanced Variant Configuration, including the LO-VC to AVC migration path and constraint modelling.
- Strong working knowledge of super BOM and super routing design, order BOM management, and make-to-order / engineer-to-order manufacturing.
- Solid integration understanding of PP, SD, MM, and CO-PC (product costing, sales order costing, variance analysis of configurable products).
- Ability to read and assess ABAP-based VC enhancements and custom dependency logic (functional-technical bridge, not necessarily a developer).
- Experience with assessment and advisory work: complexity scoring, effort estimation, options analysis, risk articulation.
- Exposure to related areas is an advantage: CPQ / Variant Configuration and Pricing (VCP), PLM/PDM integration, SAP Product Lifecycle Costing.
- Clear written and verbal communication with the ability to explain modelling complexity to non-technical executives.
- Bachelor's degree in engineering, manufacturing, computer science, or equivalent; postgraduate qualification desirable.
- 8+ years in SAP with a minimum of 5 years focused specifically on Variant Configuration in complex manufacturing environments.
- At least 2 full-cycle VC implementations and 1 S/4HANA project involving VC (greenfield, brownfield, or selective transition).
- SAP certification in PP, S/4HANA Manufacturing, or Variant Configuration preferred.
- Preferred prior experience in an assessment, health-check, or advisory role rather than build-only delivery.
- Willingness to work onsite (USA) for discovery workshops as required.
