Job Designation: RF Engineer
Job Description:
Apply RF systems engineering principles to design, integrate, test and optimize RF communication systems for Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS), with primary focus on RF optimization of existing UAV platforms and development of RF networks using COTS components for new UAV platforms. Ensure technical feasibility, performance, scalability, and reliability of RF systems.Specific Responsibilities:
- Perform complete link budget calculations (FSPL, fade margin, cable losses, antenna gain, polarization losses, RF losses, etc.)
- Evaluate and shortlist COTS radios, antennas, RF cables, connectors, filters and amplifiers.
- Optimize RF architecture, component placement, antenna location and RF interconnects considering airframe effects, multipath, shadowing, and BVLOS constraints
- Conduct RF characterization, optimization and performance validation through field testing and lab measurements
- Analyze RSSI, SNR, noise floor, interference sources, and spectrum occupancy, link stability and RF performance data to identify and resolve RF degradation in existing UAV platforms.
- Define RF qualification test plans (range testing, EMI/EMC considerations, environmental validation)
- Troubleshoot and optimize RF communication issues at system
- Design and optimize RF networks/architectures for new UAV platforms using COTS RF components, considering system requirements, frequency bands, link budget, interfaces, power, RF losses and physical constraints.
- Perform RF performance assessment and optimization of existing UAV platforms and recommend design, component, antenna, placement and interconnect improvements based on measured performance
Qualifications: Bachelor's or master’s degree in Electronics/Telecommunication Engineering or related field.
Relevant Experience: 8-10 years in RF systems, RF communication, wireless systems or RF engineering
Desired Skills & Characteristics:
- RF architecture and performance optimization for UAVs.
- Selection and integration of COTS RF components for UAV RF networks.
- Strong understanding of RF systems, electromagnetics, RF propagation, link budgets, antenna fundamentals and RF network design
- Experience with wireless communication systems, RF interfaces and communication protocols
- Hands-on experience with RF test equipment such as spectrum analyzer, VNA, signal generator, power meter, and RF measurement tools.
- Excellent verbal, written and presentation communication skills
- Problem solving skills, analytical mindset, attention to detail
- Ability to self-manage
