About the role
Responsibilities:
- Design and build long-lasting engineering artefacts that reduce complexity and increase developer velocity across the organisation.
- Solve messy, high-impact problems at the intersection of low latency and high correctness, often without a clear starting point or obvious solution.
- Foresee architectural problems or opportunities and work with leadership to address them before they impact the global marketplace.
- Lead organisation-wide development and adoption of key frameworks while role-modelling coding best practices and high-quality design review.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with Product, Science, and Ops to translate ambiguous business requirements into production-ready technical roadmaps.
- Mentor and guide other engineers, acting as a technical brand ambassador and raising the bar for excellence across the engineering organisation.
Requirements:
- 6+ years of professional experience in backend software engineering, data engineering, or a related technical role.
- Expertise in writing high-quality code to solve strategically important problems that span multiple organisations.
- Advanced proficiency in SQL and data warehousing, with a demonstrated ability to identify and reconcile architectural gaps.
- Experience leading org-wide engineering projects through all lifecycle stages: inception, stakeholder engagement, implementation, and operations.
- Proven track record of overseeing incident management processes and directing on-call rotations in alignment with global best practices.
- Demonstrated ability to make sound engineering/business tradeoffs, considering long-term implications for the greater good of Uber.
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience building high-performance, scalable distributed systems at a 100M+ user scale.
- Expertise in real-time streaming frameworks (Flink, Spark) and OLAP systems (Apache Pinot, Druid) to reduce system complexity.
- Experience with Big Data/Hadoop ecosystem tools used to automate complex data orchestrations across multiple product areas.
- Strong leadership traits: Experience serving as a representative for the organisation to the broader internal and external technical community.
- Proven ability to get alignment and buy-in for large-scale technology transformations across multiple job functions.
