11. Purpose of the Role or Function

The primary purpose of this role is to conduct hands-on, onsite technical inspections and physical quality audits at supplier facilities across India. The role acts as a critical quality verification gate ensuring component compliance prior to dispatch. The Supplier Quality Inspector is responsible for performing Pre-Dispatch / In process Inspections (PDIR), validating CMM reports and physical measurements on shop floors, evaluating casting/forging/machined part quality, and communicating quality findings directly with supplier technical teams to ensure zero-defect dispatches.

12. Main Tasks and Responsibilities

·      Conduct physical Pre-Dispatch Inspections (PDIR) and stage-wise component inspections directly at supplier manufacturing locations across India.

·      Perform and witness dimensional verification using Coordinate Measuring Machines (CMM) and review/validate supplier CMM inspection reports, probe setups, and measurement data.

·      Hands-on operation and verification using precision measuring instruments including Vernier Calipers, Micrometers, Height Gauges, Bore Gauges, Air Gauges, Surface Roughness Testers, and Profile Projectors.

·      Inspect mechanical components against engineering drawings, 3D CAD models, material specifications, and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing) callouts.

·      Perform visual, surface, and physical inspection of Castings, Forgings, and Precision Machined parts to detect defects like porosity, blowholes, cold shuts, cracks, tool marks, and burrs.

·      Prepare detailed, transparent Onsite Inspection Reports (OIR), PDIR sign-offs, and Non-Conformance Reports (NCR) immediately following supplier visits.

·      Communicate quality discrepancies and non-conformances directly to supplier quality and production heads with clear technical evidence, coordinating immediate containment actions on-site.

·      Verify calibration status and traceability of inspection instruments and gauges used at supplier testing facilities.

13. Secondary Tasks and Responsibilities

·      Follow up on Corrective and Preventive Actions (CAPA) at supplier sites to verify physical implementation of root cause countermeasures.

·      Provide ground-level quality data, photographic evidence, and inspection metrics to the Supplier Quality Engineering (SQE) team to support customer complaint resolutions and supplier rating evaluations.

·      Maintain organized inspection logs, visit records, and supplier defect history tracking.

14. Qualification

Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, Production Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or Quality Assurance.

15. Certification / Added Knowledge Preferred

·      Certified Quality Inspector (CQI) / ASQ certification or equivalent.

·      Formal training or certification in GD&T (ASME Y14.5).

·      CMM operational training / certification (e.g., PC-DMIS, Calypso, or Zeiss software).

·      Internal Auditor awareness/training in ISO 9001 / IATF 16949.

16. Desired Computer Skills / Knowledge

·      Strong ability to read, interpret, and validate CMM software outputs and measurement execution files.

·      Proficiency in reading complex engineering blueprints, 2D drawings, and GD&T symbols.

·      Basic computer proficiency in MS Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint) for writing digital inspection reports and logging NCRs.

17. Desired Managerial / Leadership Skills / Soft Skills / Other Skills

·      Strong Communication & Interpersonal Skills: Excellent ability to communicate quality requirements, articulate non-conformances persuasively, and interact professionally with supplier teams and internal leads.

·      Technical Measurement Expertise: In-depth hands-on knowledge of CMM operations, layout inspection, and precision measuring instruments.

·      Problem-Solving & Assertiveness: Ability to uphold quality standards firmly on supplier shop floors without compromising on specifications.

·      High Mobility & Adaptability: Willingness to travel frequently across major industrial clusters in India.

18. Special Remarks / Comments

·      Travel required (approx. 40% – 50% field travel) to supplier units across industrial hubs in India (e.g., Pune, Rajkot, Belgaum, Kolhapur, Chennai, Coimbatore, NCR).

·      Flexibility to manage dynamic travel schedules based on pre-dispatch inspection requests.

Analogy for the Role

Think of this role as a 'Field Quality Investigator & Gatekeeper.' While the Supplier Quality Engineer establishes quality standards and strategic systems from headquarters, the Supplier Quality Inspector operates on the front lines at the supplier's shop floor—physically inspecting parts with CMM and gauges, catching defects before shipping, and ensuring that only 100% compliant parts pass through the gate.
