Fullstack Developer

As a Senior Engineer Level 2 (API Tech Lead), you will lead the design and development of high‑quality, scalable, and secure API solutions using Java and Apigee, supporting critical business and product capabilities.

Responsibilities:

• You will work closely with architects, engineering managers, product owners, and other technology teams to ensure API designs are consistent, reusable, and aligned with enterprise architecture standards and user experience expectations.
• You will provide technical leadership across the full delivery lifecycle, from early design and proof‑of‑concept through to implementation, release, and operational support.
• The role involves contributing to and shaping solution designs, performing technical impact analysis, validating proposed approaches, and proactively identifying risks or issues before and during development.
• You will take ownership of improving existing APIs and services, working with colleagues and business owners to implement practical enhancements and modernisation initiatives.
• Lead legacy modernisation initiatives by transforming monolithic or tightly coupled applications into scalable, cloud-native solutions, leveraging Java/Spring Boot, microservices, and GCP services.
• Collaborate across frontend and backend teams to deliver end-to-end solutions, ensuring seamless integration between user-facing applications, APIs, and backend services.
• You will drive improvements in development practices, tooling, and technical documentation, maintaining and evolving development standards within your technical domain.
• You will manage implementation activities, including change control and release planning, ensuring solutions are production‑ready and fit for purpose end to end.
• You will act as a point of contact for API and domain‑specific technical support, supporting other teams and contributing to operational stability by resolving complex technical issues that impact services or delivery.
• You will also evaluate and propose new technologies and methodologies that enhance development practices, product quality, and developer experience.
• Establish and maintain credibility and working relationships with other teams within Bupa, being an ambassador for Bupa IT within the business community, supporting a customer service culture.

The core requirements for the job include the following:

Technical Skills:

• Strong programming background with a minimum of 4+ years' experience in developing highly scalable and efficient applications using Java, Spring Boot, Microservices, Apigee, JavaScript, Node.js, TypeScript, and cloud-native technologies.
• Strong hands-on experience in Java, Spring Boot, and Microservices-based architectures, with expertise in building and modernising cloud-native applications on Google Cloud Platform (GCP).
• Experience driving legacy modernisation initiatives, implementing domain-driven service decomposition, and establishing robust automated testing frameworks such as Playwright to ensure application quality and reliability.
• Google Cloud Platform (GCP) stack or equivalent experience in AWS, Azure.
• Application containerisation using Docker and container orchestration services using Kubernetes on GCP (GKE) and/or Azure (AKS).
• Pub/Sub event handling backbone using GCP Pub/Sub and Kafka.
• Composable architectures using domain modelling, services and microservices, leveraging techniques such as service mesh using Istio and circuit-breaker patterns.
• MFE frameworks leveraging Webpack 5 with module federation.
• Database technologies, both SQL and NoSQL, using cloud-based implementations like Postgres and MongoDB, Cassandra or Redis.
• Strong CI/CD pipeline automation with quality gates leveraging GitHub Actions and automated testing tools such as Playwright, RestAssured, K6, Gatling, Selenium, SonarQube, and ESLint.
• Observability and insights. Leveraging tools like OpenTelemetry, Prometheus, Grafana or equivalent toolsets.
• Documentation as code leveraging tools like and a variety of plugins tapping into Github source repositories and read.me files.
